So, I read recently that the CW just ordered a pilot for a Green Arrow show. (HITFIX LINK.) Sadly enough, it looks like poor Justin Hartley is going to have absolutely nothing to do with the project. (I say "poor" Justin Hartley because the "Aquaman" show didn't get picked up - where he was the lead - and he played third/fourth fiddle in SV for years and - now - his character is going to get his own show, but some other guy is going to play the lead.)

So, here's my question - are you going to watch? Are you excited by the prospect? And did you also let out an evil cackle and say to yourself, "Clearly, the CW is missing the numbers that "Smallville" used to generate for them. Those bastards." )

Personally, I think it would have been better for them to do a show on the Flash. The Green Arrow seems too poised for angst and tragedy. And I also can't help but feel that this is DC Comics' way of putting on a Batman show without greenlighting Batman.

Also, I think I'm having difficulty imagining someone other than Hartley playing the GA. And here's - of course - the shipping question. Do you guys think they'd have the Black Canary on the show from the beginning? I guess the "star crossed" lovers thing works a hell of a lot better in the GA/BC relationship than it ever did with Clark/Lana. But honestly? It kind of seems like a drag when you know that Ollie cheats on Dinah and that they just split up in the comics.

What do you think? Will this be another "Smallville" or will it be "Birds of Prey"?

The other bit of Pilot news that caught my eye was the two orders of "Beauty and the Beast". (EW LINK.)

Clearly, the massive success of "Once Upon a Time" and the modest success of "Grimm" has made both the CW and ABC sit up and take notice. And now we see the advent of the fairy tale genre spring to life (much like comic book stuff went into hyper overdrive after the success of "Heroes").

Personally, this particular fairy tale has never held much fascination for me. I always thought that Belle had a case of Stockholm Syndrome and that didn't feel especially romantic to me. I've only seen bits and pieces of the 80s show starring Linda Hamilton and wasn't able to sit through the recent movie adaptation ("Beastly").

The CW version: I agree with EW's take that the girl starring in the CW version will be about 87 pounds and very young. It may even be set in high school or college. Chances are quite high that the girl will look like the heroine of "Vampire Diaries" (who, imo, is rather gorgeous). The "beast" will probably be young, hot and gorgeous. I'm thinking an ex-model. He'll probably have some sort of an ailment that makes him slightly less hot about an hour every day (he avoids the "beauty" for that hour until - finally - she figures it out but still loves him anyway; that'll give them one season of conflict). Utlimately, it'll turnout that they're soulmates and that Fate has always decreed that Beauty is the answer to everything. Everyone the Beauty meets will fall madly in love with her and she'll probably date about 20 other guys during the course of the show just to torture the Beast some more.

The ABC version: It looks like the less complicated version of "Once Upon a Time"... if they play their cards right, this could end up being a better show than "Once Upon a Time" because "OUPAT" is already suffering from "too many questions, not enough answers" problems. And the ensemble is so huge that character development is rather limited. So, if they follow the path of the "10th Kingdom", they could very well make this the BETTER fairy tale show. I hope they cast a decent Beauty and Beast though. (And, hopefully, ABC will continue their trend of skewing older when casting female leads - 30s and 40s.)

So - what do you guys think? Will you watch? Or do you think this will be another "Wonder Woman"? Good concept, but shouldn't see the light of day?

Yeah, I feel bad for Justin. I kinda see them thinking it would be cool to get him to guest star at some point though if the show gets picked up.

I'll probably try it out. But I'm not excited for it either. I think there are better characters to create a show around. Also show about a character who can be dark, broody, and angsty (with a dysfunctional relationship as well) on the CW doesn't sound all that appealing to me.

I can understand why they wouldn't want Justin, because then it would be like an SV spinoff instead of fresh. (And he's probably older than their typical actor.)

I'll check out the Pilot if it gets picked up, but I doubt I'll be a regular viewer. There are only two CW shows I watch right now (Supernatural and Hart of Dixie) and both of those are because I'm invested in the actors.

I would definitely watch if he guest stars. But I can imagine they won't do that until well into the series run. (And he'd probably play a villain or something.

Hmm...

I'd watch the Pilot episode of a Green Arrow show.

I'm not at all interested in a tween/teen Beauty and the Beast. I don't want to see a remake of the original TV show either. So... I'm not sure what's left. I guess it depends on the previews and the cast. Meh.

I'll bet the CW does miss the ratings Smallville generated. LOL!

I'll watch both if they seem interesting (more interested in what ABC will cook up) because I'm a sucker for a good sci-fic/fantasy type show. I find "Once Upon a Time" to be terribly uneven, but I can't help but keep going back.

How are you, by the way? Long time no talk!!

I'm doing well, I just haven't been on Livejournal very much.

I've taken a break from TV for the month but I'm watching a few shows... it's strange. I'm not really into any fandom the way I was with Smallville. I'm not sure I want to be. LOL! Maybe that's a once in a lifetime phenomenon.

How have you been? How's your original story coming.

Yeah - no fandom has really interested me the way Smallville did. In fact, I look back on how much I invested in the SV fandom and I wonder why I did it now. LOL (Not that I regret it. It was fun while it lasted and I made a lot of good friends through that experience.)

My TV watching has gone down quite a bit, too. I have a tendency to DVR a lot of stuff and then watch several episodes all in one go over a Sunday afternoon. And nothing is really worth obsessing over.

I kind of am smiling because you kind of described how Lana Lang was being depicted in Smallville and how ironic can it be that when they finally casted Beauty, they chose Kristin Kreuk for the role.

LOL! I know... I was thinking the same thing when they cast KK. I even said tha tthey'd cast someone like the lead in "Vampire Diaries" - who, herself, was cast because she was like KK. So they just want back to the original prototype.

I wasn't going to watch the CW version, anyway, but this cinches it for me. I cannot sit through the "Saga of Lana Lang Part II".
