Fall TV So Far...
Oct. 17th, 2011 12:16 pm![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
Apparently, I have very little to say about things that are not related to Smallville, Harry Potter, and fanfiction. So... I'm going to try to fix that. Starting with a post about how I feel about Fall TV so far this year.... Just some quick reactions to various shows.
Returning Shows:
Supernatural: I'm enjoying it this season. I am a Cass fan and I'm bummed that he's gone. But... I am enjoying Dean & Bobby (like I always do) and Sam is only annoying me at a moderate level. I do get a feeling of "rinse, later, repeat" with the plots. (Really, Dean? Killing someone and then hiding it from Sam? Like that's EVER worked for you? Really, Sam? Being all tortured and hiding it from Dean and Bobby? Like that's EVER worked for you?) These two boys are so good together, such great brothers, and love each other to death (and, in some cases, beyond death). BUT... can they just stop lying to each other about crap? We're 7 seasons in & they STILL act like they're in S1. Sometimes, it's like I'm watching Smallville all over again. (Much like how Welling & Durance's gorgeousness made it all OK, I feel like the pretty that is Jensen Ackles makes me ignore plotholes I'd otherwise cry over.)
Parks & Recreation: I love this show. It's such a feel good show and it features one of the strongest, successful, and competent female characters on TV. I am a Ben/Leslie shipper, but I like how/why they broke these two up. For anyone not watching this show: Go find S2 and start watching. (S1 took awhile to hit it's stride.) It's the best Thursday show.
Community: I loved the latest one (the one on "Chaos Theory") but hated the two before that. Community walks a fine line between making it's characters fun to watch and making the characters loathsome. I don't need them to be perfect and am OK with their many issues. However... there comes a point when it's no longer funny & this is supposed to be a comedy. I think that "Arreseted Development" managed to pull this off rather brilliantly, but Community falters from time to time. However, when they do an episode righ (like Chaos Theory, Warfare, or Dungeons and Dragons) then they do it RIGHT. And make me want to re-watch over and over again. It's for those brilliant episodes that I keep watching.
Haven: I was very "eh" about this season. First of all, I did enjoy Emily Rose in the first season quite a bit (which led to my Audrey Parker love) but - for whatever reason - she became a totally wooden actress in S2. Audrey was barely allowed to emote or show emotion. Since Nathan is also a wooden character, I started to become very frustrated with their interactions. HOWEVER... still a fan and will watch S3. (Very happy they got renewed.) And YAY for my OTP declaring their hots for each other! The exchange where Audrey invites Nathan over for dinner (Audrey: "I'll make pancakes!" Nathan: "Pancakes? Is that dinner or... b-b-b-b-breakfast?" *cue Audrey's mischevious smile*) is what all ships should get. Evil cliffhanger, though. Especially since we have to wait ONE YEAR to get S3.
The Good Wife: I'm just going to say it: I do not think Kalinda is a badass. I have NEVER thought she's a badass and the actress's wooden acting grates on my nerves like no one's business. Will/Alicia = hot, hot, hot. Is it wrong that my response to their hot scene was, "How come Lois and Clark never got a scene like this on SV????" The kids continue to be annoying as all hell. (Especially the girl with her equally annoying tutor.) Eli continues to be awesome. Peter is intriguing -- I want more of him. Cary... well, I'd like him more if he stopped being in Kalinda. I do NOT get what people see in that woman. She just USES people and they let her. Love, love, love Diane.
Breaking Bad: Oh.my.God. There are no words to describe how excellent and briliant this show is. Mesmerized throughout the entire season. The wait to the next season is going to be TORTURE.
Modern Family: Still hilarious. But, my God, the actress who plays Claire needs to eat a cookie! Or about TWENTY of them. She's way too thin.
Big Bang Theory: I'm enjoying this season. I'm so glad they added in the girls. They are sometimes funnier than the guys. Still not sure why Bernadette thinks Howard is her soulmate. The guy needs to grow up and MOVE OUT.
New Shows:
Terra Nova: I'm watching it. But it could be SO much better. One problem I have is that they chose only ONE family to focus on. They should have gone the "Lost" style and introduced us to 4-5 different families, so we could get invested in all sorts of different stories & they could play with the backstory of a lot of different characters. As it stands now, a lot of the show hinges on one really getting emotionally invested in this core family (what is their NAME? See, I don't even remember, because they're bland). Dr. Hottie and Mr. Cop Hottie have a pretty good marriage and the kids seem to be settling in OK. So where is the conflict and why should I care that they almost get eaten by dinosaurs every week? One thing I will say, though. I find it really interesting that they cast a British-Indian in the role as Dr. Hottie. I really like that it's very blase that the kids are of mixed heritage. When I was growing up, there were no characters on TV that were South Asian (unless they were played as a stereotype) and so I never saw people "like me" on TV. My kids, however, will now watch shows where they will see themselves in these characters... people who look like them.
New Girl: I'm not hooked on this one. I can watch it (if nothing else is on) but I find the premise to be rather thin.
Suburgatory: Rather enjoying this. I hope it sticks around.
Whitney: This is kind of unwatchable.
2 Broke Girls: Hhhmmm... can watch it if I have to... but not really enjoying it.
Hart of Dixie: I have a huge love ofSummer Rachel Bilson, so I would watch her read a telephone book if I had to... So, of course, I'm watching this. It helps that the show is a little bit like "Northern Exposure meets Gilmore Girls"... which is my style of TV. Unfortunately, it is not as good as either one of those two shows. They cast Scott Porter as her Love Interest and he's blander than toast. Not only that, but they made him a guy who is engaged to a woman that is the biggest TWIT of all time, so you seriously have to wonder if there is something wrong with him. Why would I root for the main character (who is supposed to be a badass surgeon) to hook up with a guy who has NO TASTE in women and is already engaged to an evil bitch? And the second guy -- the one who is supposed to be all hot and studly - is a bartender and is one of those manwhores that Hollywood and Romance Novels think that woman the world over want to be with. (Not me -- I think he needs to take a shower and get checked for STDs.) So... yeah... the show is OK, but they need to step it up in the Love Interest department, as well as the side characters. Lemon is too much of a one-dimensional bitch.
So... what are you guys watching? Any new shows that you would recommend? Any old shows that you're happy with this year?

Date: 2011-10-18 08:07 pm (UTC)So, I've given up. For whatever reason, DW will never be for me.
"Bones"... I may try watching again, since they are doing the pregnancy thing. But I really bailed on that show a few years ago.
What older stuff are you watching?

Date: 2011-10-20 04:28 pm (UTC)From what I'm seeing on "Bones," the pregnancy was the kickstart it needed. Even the critics are really liking the series again. Hurray for Emily Deschanel and her new family!
I'm about to watch "I Love Lucy" and I found that Netflix is streaming "The Dick Van Dyke Show." That flavor of older TV. I loved these shows when I was younger.

Date: 2011-10-21 07:08 pm (UTC)Overall, though, I think the problem I have is the low-budget way it's created. For me, sci-fi/fantasy shows are fun when they're slick and modern. Battlestar Galactica, Supernatural, Smallville, Fringe, Warehouse 13, etc. I'm more able to get into it if it's very new (and, I guess, American?). I didn't really enjoy Torchwood, either.
"Bones"... yeah, I think the pregnancy might make it worth watching again. Let's see.
"I love Lucy"... I ADORE that show. I can watch endless repeats of ILL. For the oldies, I love "Three's Company", "All in the Family", "Cosby Show", "Family Ties", and "Growing Pains".

Date: 2011-10-18 01:38 am (UTC)I'm trying so hard with Hart of Dixie, but besides the two dimensional characters, I don't think the material is good enough for Rachel Bilson to shine. I think it's only going to be another couple of episodes for me before I jump off the wagon.
I'm enjoying Pan Am. It's fun, but with some surprisingly decent character stories and I need some shows of my shows to be fun.
I'm still enjoying House. I was over Lisa Edelstein a few years ago, so I hope they don't bring her onto The Good Wife. I hope Amber Tamblyn comes back; I liked the dynamic between her and House. I like when Foreman is a bad-ass, so while I think it's ridiculous that he is already the Dean of Medicine, I like that House is supposed to answer to him.
Suburgatory has some good moments; the father is great, and Cheryl Hines is a scream as the over-the-top voice of truth.
Glee is already more interesting this season than last, so yay. And double yay that Idina Menzel is back. I'm trying to be spoiler free, so I don't know how long she's back, but hopefully for a while.
Ringer is decent. Started watching as an SMG fan, and the plot is interesting (a darker Judith Michaels' Deceptions, with a "bad" sister) though Ioan Gruffud's character would be so much more interesting if he was more of a bad-ass. I'm not feeling the heat for why the sister had a hot affair with the BFF's husband. He whiiiiiiiiines.
Grey's started off good, though Private Practice is a snoozer. I'm just going through the rote there, I wish they'd get rid of Amelia FOREVER and double Charlotte's screentime. Must have more Charlotte. And Cooper.
Also having fun with my guilty pleasure reality shows of Survivor, Top Chef (food porn!), and the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills.
Waiting for White Collar, Pretty Little Liars, and One Tree Hill (yes, part of me is a closet teenager, your Rachel Bilson is my Sophia Bush) to come back.

Date: 2011-10-18 08:04 pm (UTC)"The Good Wife"... sheesh, I hate Kalinda (and do not get why folks love her so much). To me, she's the Chloe of "The Good Wife". Always has the answers and knows everything (because she can do a search on google like no one's business) and is always smarter than everyone else in the room. And, yet, I see NO REASON why she should be that way. (I thought this week's episode was laughable... she follows someone in an empty alleyway wearing a tight leather skirt and heeled knee-highed boots. Yeah, like THAT wouldn't stand out.)
"House" -- I gave up on this one. I actually used to be a Cuddy/House shipper & then I saw what they did with him at the end of the last season (she breaks up with him because he's HIM) and I just stopped watching the second she broke up with him. And I can't say that I want to go back.
"Pan Am" -- I tried one episode. And then stopped. I found most of the characters to be too bland (and the guys were almost impossible to tell apart). Maybe I'll catch this one On Demand when nothing else is on. It wasn't BAD, per se. But I also didn't think it was good.
"Glee" -- I bailed on this last season. This season, I saw "Asian F" and liked it. But I really don't feel like I need to watch this show.
"Ringer" -- I was never a huge SMG fan & so I steered clear of this one.
"Grey's" -- I got sucked back in this season. Surprisingly. I'm enjoying it.
"Private Practice" -- I bailed on this about 2 seasons ago. I wanted to love this SO much (because I love most of the cast), but they just have not given me enough to work with.
Not a reality show fan. But if I was, I'd watch "Top Chef".
LOL at your Sophia Bush comment. That woman is GORGEOUS.

Date: 2011-10-18 08:08 pm (UTC)Have you watched any episodes in seasons 2-4? I don't know, but I find myself becoming unbearably obsessed with the show.
I know you are fantastic at getting under a character's skin, and in their heads to see their motivations. Maybe you should try it with Beckett, and maybe you would like her more! lol
I think you should try again, but that's just because it's my new baby. :))
Also, I've seen a lot of my Clois followers on twitter starting this show and becoming obsessed. ;) Further motivation? Haha

Date: 2011-10-22 05:46 pm (UTC)I watched the first season and then stopped even though I really wanted to see it. Now I've started watching the fourth season and am catching up with the old seasons too. I think its a really fun show.
I love the way they've developed the Beckett/Castle relationship. The right amount of drama without turning it into an angst-filled soap opera. I'm enjoying it.
And off course waiting for White Collar to return in January. Other than that I'm not much into TV these days. I watch shows here and there but there aren't any shows that I'm ardently following. I don't think I'll ever be as obsessed with a TV show as I was with Smallville. In fact I've recently rewatched many scenes for an essay I'm writing and I'm planning to rewatch the whole thing again. *sigh*
Have you seen Game of Thrones?

Date: 2011-10-24 08:51 pm (UTC)I liked it. I thought it was good. I'm looking forward to seeing the second season. (What a cliffhanger!!!)
"White Collar" -- I feel like I would love that show. I just need it to come out on Netflix streaming.

Date: 2011-10-19 03:06 pm (UTC)Supernatural - I was hoping last season would officially put an end to the brotherly angst and mistrust there. There as to be some kind of middle ground between giving the boys a happy life (which I imagine they wouldn't want) and the constant misery, distrust, and looking like the both are juts tired and want it to over. I wish the producers would realize that. Mostly with Dean. He's been like this (with the exception of few rare moments and episodes) since s5. He's my favorite character on the show but since then, I just find him exhausting to watch and I was hoping that we'd see less of this in s7. Unfortunately from what I've read, it seems like it's going yet another season of this. Cas is my favorite character, behind Dean, and now he's gone so there isn't even that to look forward to.
The Good Wife - For me Kalinda was awesome in s1. I adored her back then. But yeah I don't think she's been all that great since then. It feels like after Archie's Emmy win and the popularity of the character, they decided to take some of the character traits she had and just took it to the extreme. I always hated that scene where she took the baseball bat to Blake's car and her interaction with him in general in that episode. The whole thing was just so incredibly weird and she honestly felt like an entirely different character then the one from s1, just like she did for a lot of s2. I thought she was much more well-rounded character in s1. She used to be a lot more entertaining then and she actually seemed to have a sense of humor as well. They stripped a lot of this away from her in s2 and seemed to try and play up this isolated, mysterious, and bad-ass vibe and ended taking away a lot of what made her an awesome character to me in the place. The only time I really enjoyed her scenes in s2 was when it came to her friendship with Alicia. The rest of the time I found her incredibly dull, which was really sad since I used to really like her. I think there are quite few reasons to like her, but unfortunately I do think a lot of the Kalinda is badass stuff comes from "I need care about emotions" stuff from her. I've actually seen a lot of comments about how Kalinda actually caring more and showing more consideration for people (unless it's Alicia) is proof that the show is trying to make her more girly and less of a strong character. I don't get that at all.
They don't need to change the character but at some point there needs to be some character growth here as well. And with the way they had Cary calling her on her behavior this s3, showing her making mistakes like when Cary played her in the premier, and Julianna's comments regarding what Kalinda did and the Kalinda/Alicia friendship, I think we might actually see some of that this season. Atleast I'm hoping we will. Mainly though I just wish that she would start resembling the character we saw in s1 and grow from there.
I only ever like the kids when they are interacting with their parents. I loved the scene between Grace and Alicia in the premier. But whenever they show gives them their own little storylines, I really have to interest in them. I'm glad that glad Dianne is getting more screentime. I especially loved the way she was used in the last episode. She's great and there is so much more they could with her character. I hope we see more of her this season. I love Eli as well. Will and Alicia are hot together but I wish they would start talking more soon.

Date: 2011-10-21 07:11 pm (UTC)"Supernatural"... yeah, I know what you mean about it being exhausting to watch Dean constantly feel horrible about himself.
Kalinda -- I find that I did like her more in S1. But, in general, I never saw her as more than a means to an end. Exposition Girl. (Very much like Chloe from Smallville.) Good in small doses, but should not be considered a main character. Then Archie Punjabi got an award and the next you know, she's supposed to be the Most Awesome Character Ever.

Date: 2011-10-19 08:50 pm (UTC)I actually have not been watching too much new TV lately. We've been rewatching all the old seasons of Friday Night Lights and 30 Rock on Netflix and that has been wonderful.
I am still watching Modern Family and it has been hilarious. I agree with you about Julie Bowen. She is so thin that it's painful for me to look at. But a good friend of mine convinced me that it's in-character for Claire. He said that he felt like Claire is the kind of woman that probably burns calories while she is sleeping because she is so anxious and hugh strung so it didn't bother him that she was so thin. I sort of understood his point. I'm biased because I prefer curvier bodies on women and I don't find that kind of thiness attractive. So my natural inclination is to want women to gain weight. But I did understand his point.
Modern Family has been really good this season though.
Big Bang Theory has also been funny. I know it might be sacrilige to say this...but I just don't find Amy Farrah Fowler to be that funny. So episodes that are heavy on her are not winners to me. I love Penny and I still prefer her interactions with the boys the best. But the show is still funny no doubt.
I actually think How I met Your Mother has been hilarious this season. I thought it was starting to lose it's footing last season but it's been much improved this year. We are returning to Ted's journey and the comedy has been gold.
I am watching Ringer because I was a huge Buffy fan. So far it's cracky fun and I can see potential for it to grow into something more. It's entertained me and held my interest which is more than I can say for many other shows.
I've been wanting to start The Good Wife for a while now because I heard it's a great show. I'm going to see if I can get it no Netflix.
I'm also going to start watching Park and Rec and Community. I might take your advice and skip Season 1?
Also, to indulge in the shallow for a moment, I will say outright that I have been very much enjoying the rather lustful pictures that have been released of Henry Cavill from the Man of Steel set. I still have no idea what to expect from this movie but there is no doubt that we have another Clark Kent that I will probably sit there the whole movie wanting to bang. For now, i'm focusing on the shallow since we have no clue what the plot of this movie is going to be. But i'm hoping it's good. Wish I didn't have to wait so long for another Clark/Lois fix.
Hope all is well with you!

Date: 2011-10-21 07:25 pm (UTC)Friday Night Lights & 30 Rock are both awesome. Definitely worth re-watching. Although, I do think the earlier seasons of both shows are better than the latter seasons. (I did love the FNL finale, though. I miss that show.)
I totally get what your friend was saying about Julie Bowen's character. I could see a very anal, control freak kind of a stay-at-home mom being very think like that. (I know quite a few mysefl, in real life.) BUT... if that's the case... maybe they should address it on the show? I mean, I don't think that they have intentionally written Claire to be super-thin. I think this is something coming from the actress & I think the creators need to address it. Anoerixia is a huge problem and she works with two young actresses (who play her daughters) and I think that they need to do something about it.
BBT: I think it's OK not to like Amy Farah Fowler. I can see how her character could grate. Personally, I find Sheldon to be rather grating, so she was a little different for me. In general, I am finding this season to be very funny, though. I'm glad they changed up the dynamics a bit.
For me, "How I Met Your Mother" is a bumpy ride. I love Robin, but am not happy with how they've been handling her character. Other than that, Marshall, Barney, and Lily continue to be awesome.
Parks & Rec: Oh, where to begin. Well, the first season was only 6 episodes. And yeah, they weren't very good. Then, S2 had 24 episodes. The point where it gets REALLY good is Episode 23. At that point, they bring in two new characters & they really seem to figure out where they are going with this. So, in an odd way, I feel like "P&R" can be divided into 2 different series: "The Pit" episodes and the "General" episodes. The dividing line is is Episode 23 of S2. The episodes in S1 and episodes 1-22 of S2 are still rather funny, but not 'one of the best shows on TV" funny.
So... uh... my advice? Skip S1. Watch S2. And by the time you get to S3, you'll be hooked. But S3 is the BEST.
For "Community", you should start with "Modern Warfare"... work your way up from there. The first few episodes of "Community" are almost painfully boring.
Henry Cavill... hhhmmm... he IS looking mighty hot as Clark Kent. I'm loving the pics, too.

Date: 2011-10-25 06:41 am (UTC)I watch Mike and Molly (CBS), BBC America's Luther, The Mentalist (CBS), Fringe (FOX) and Revenge (ABC). Revenge is the only new fall show that I'm watching and I love it so far. There are boring plot points but ... The Count of Monte Cristo is an irresistible tale I think. I haven't given up on SPN but I'm not in any hurry to watch the new season either.
I watch Doctor Who which recently went on Hiatus and I watched the cancelled show New Amsterdam on Hulu.
I gave up on Glee but I'm thinking of watching American Horror. The show is much too scary for me, but maybe in a double bill with Glee I could bear it. Those shows are the yen and yang of one another.
I saw your post about the fairy tale show. From the previews it didn't really interest me but maybe I'll give it a try.
I'm watching Deadwood Season 2, Rome and The Tudors on DVD/Netflix but it's slow going right now.

Date: 2011-11-03 05:20 pm (UTC)Honestly? I think BB is a better show than Weeds. I gave up on Weeds in the middle of the 2nd season. I found the main character to be horrible.
I really liked "New Amsterdam" when it was on air.
