I looked back on the fiction books I read this past year and decided to rate the ones I thought were my top ten. Two thoughts occurred to me: (1) I didn’t read that much for pleasure because I read a lot for the three graduate classes I took earlier this year and (2) I didn’t enjoy a lot of the books I did read for pleasure. Anyway, here’s my list (after much soul searching). What does your list look like?

10) Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews: I read the entire series this year and I’m lumping into one as though it were one big book. Urban fantasy is normally not my thing. I don’t like the first person narrative, I don’t like the lack of emphasis on the romance, and I also don’t like that the same coupleRead more... )

The Big Read reckons that the average adult has only read 6 of the top 100 books they’ve printed.

1) Look at the list and bold those you have read.

2) Italicize those you intend to read.

3) Underline those you LOVE.

4) Strikethrough the books you’d rather shove hot pokers in your eyes than read (or finish).

5) ASTERISK ** next to books partially read (and add a comment explaining).

So I thought I'd share this lovely Clois vid that gives a nice overview of some of the best Clois moments on the show....

Hurricane Sandy landed in my state and I found that I had plenty of time on my hands. After flipping through my Kindle library for a few minutes, I arrived at the conclusion that I didn't have anything on there that I was really interested in reading. Ever since I finished "Cinder", I've been hankering for a book series of that sort, but haven't found anything that satisfied that itch.

My son had just finished up "Mark of Athena" and had been pressuring me to read the sequel to the "Percy Jackson" series for awhile. When I told him that I was at a loss on what to read, he rummaged around until he found all three (massive) books in the series and handed them to me. With absolutely nothing else to do, I armed myself with a flashlight and settled down to read the three books that have been published so far.

I have to admit that I've been really enjoying them so far. I've finished the first two in the series and am now on "Mark of Athena" (I hate that I'll have to wait a year in between books from now on). The books are fairly cookie cutter and seem to follow the exact same formula every single time, but I can't help but be drawn into the story and I find myself rooting for the characters. I thought the Percy Jackson series (the first one) was a little childish but I read them with my son because I like to know what he's up to in the book world. This series is a little more racy than the first one (the characters are 13-17 and there is a lot of "he kissed her" and "she kissed him" going on) but it still very much reads like a kid's book series. It's been a little odd to do the head-hopping but I can understand why Riordan chose to write it that way.

Anyone else reading this sequel or has read the original? What are your thoughts on it?

I'm also thinking about diving into the books series called "Hex Hall" and since I'm fan of Jasper Fforde's Thursday Next series, I thought I'd give his new young adult novel a try. Anyone read those and have any thoughts on them (good or bad)?

A few months ago, I was running in and out of my local Barnes & Noble and a book caught my attention. I had absolutely zero time on my hands (my husband and kids were waiting for me in the car) but I stopped and picked up the book to take a look at it. Imagine my surprise when I read the back cover and found out that the story was about a girl who is the daughter of two superheroes. The girl does not have powers of her own and has to deal with what it means to the be the "normal" daughter of two larger than life super-powered beings.

Naturally, as a Superman fan, this intrigued me. There are a lot of Superman fanfics floating out there about kids that Clark Kent and Lois Lane have together (and probably a lot about kids that Wonder Woman and Superman have together, but I'd rather stick a fork in my eye than try to hunt those down). In every fic I've read, the kids always have super-powers. I never considered what the story would be like if the kid didn't have superpowers. Of course, if the kid's mother is Lois Lane, chances are that the kid won't feel too bad about it.

Maybe.

Anyway, I put the book down and made a mental note to download onto my Kindle later. But, as these things go, I couldn't remember the name of the book! Now, finally, I managed to hunt it down. It's called: After the Golden Age. This month is going to be insanely busy for me but I'm hoping I'll have enough time to read it.

Finally had a chance to watch it. Loved it. Very odd, but I'm shipping Black Widow and Hawkeye like nobody's business. What is odd about that is that (1) I had SJ with the passion of a thousand suns and (2) I know NOTHING about them because I'm not a Marvel universe fan.

Anyone else joining me on this shipping bandwagon? And anyone know what the deal is with them in canon?

Wonder Woman is wearing pants!! OK, no, that's not why it's awesome. But it helps.

Real Life has a been a b***h so I haven't had a chance to post here (or wander around) in a LOOONNNGGG time. It doesn't help that I write a lot for grad school now (and it's performance appraisal time at work so I'm writing a lot for that, too) and so I just don't want to come on here to write for the hell of it.

But I miss you all (really missing the Smallville fandom lately) so I thought I'd post a bit about random things and see what you all are up to....

You guys going to read it? Thoughts?

I could do without the Chloe Sullivan-Queen business. Will post more later on how I feel (still processing it), but what do you guys think???

I'm running a test to see who's reading my posts. So, if you read this, leave me a one-word comment about your day that starts with the third letter of your LJ USERNAME. Only one word please. Then repost so I can leave a word for you. Don't just post a word and not copy - that's not as much fun!

So, I read recently that the CW just ordered a pilot for a Green Arrow show. (HITFIX LINK.) Sadly enough, it looks like poor Justin Hartley is going to have absolutely nothing to do with the project. (I say "poor" Justin Hartley because the "Aquaman" show didn't get picked up - where he was the lead - and he played third/fourth fiddle in SV for years and - now - his character is going to get his own show, but some other guy is going to play the lead.)

So, here's my question - are you going to watch? Are you excited by the prospect? And did you also let out an evil cackle and say to yourself, "Clearly, the CW is missing the numbers that "Smallville" used to generate for them. Those bastards." )

Personally, I think it would have been better for them to do a show on the Flash. The Green Arrow seems too poised for angst and tragedy. And I also can't help but feel that this is DC Comics' way of putting on a Batman show without greenlighting Batman.

Also, I think I'm having difficulty imagining someone other than Hartley playing the GA. And here's - of course - the shipping question. Do you guys think they'd have the Black Canary on the show from the beginning? I guess the "star crossed" lovers thing works a hell of a lot better in the GA/BC relationship than it ever did with Clark/Lana. But honestly? It kind of seems like a drag when you know that Ollie cheats on Dinah and that they just split up in the comics.

What do you think? Will this be another "Smallville" or will it be "Birds of Prey"?

The other bit of Pilot news that caught my eye was the two orders of "Beauty and the Beast". (EW LINK.)

Whenever I see news items like this one, I miss LA with the passion of a thousand suns. If I were still there, I'd convince a good friend to stand with me in line starting 12pm and I'd camp out until 6pm in the hopes that two seats would open up.

I live fairly close to NYC but (1) I don't find a lot of these types of cool things in NY as much and (2) none of my friends here have a passion for TV or film in the same way my friends in LA did.

So... yeah... really missing LA and my friends there a lot right now.

It's so odd to be doing this, but I'm participating in a Holiday gift exchange for[livejournal.com profile] hp_tng. I can't say which prompt I claimed (it's supposed to be a secret), but I can say that I'm very STOKED to be doing this. And, oddly, terrified. I was always a little nervous when I wrote gifts for people in the Smallville fandom, but my writing in the HP fandom is so new that I'm convinced that whoever reads it will go, "Eh? What the hell is this? This is not what I wanted!"

But... hope springs eternal that I can pull it off. It'll be posted here between December 1st - December 31st. It'll probably be a one-shot. For all you Harry Potter fans... be on the look out! :)

And... just because I think this is pretty... I wanted to share....

Does it ever happen that you read a book and you "see" certain actors/TV characters in the story? I mean, of course, I love Tom Welling & Jensen Ackles, so I have a tendency to see their looks in almost every single hero I read in any of my books (especially if they've got dark hair or brownish hair).

But... recently... I was reading a book ("Talk Me Down" by Victoria Dahl) and the two main characters are almost exact replicas of Emily Rose and Lucas Bryant (from "Haven"... they play Lucy & Nathan). What's even weirder is that the book is set in a small town and the guy (Ben) is a police chief! (Which is what Bryant's character is on the show "Haven".)

While I adore Lucas Bryant and his character (so frakkin' adorkable, it's not even funny), it's actually getting to be a little distracting.... kind of in a good way, but also a little weird. I even looked up the publication date to see if - maybe - the author got her inspiration FROM "Haven", but saw that the book came out LONG before the show came out.

Anyway... has this ever happened to you guys? That you're reading a book and you're like, "BAM... that one actor is THIS character..." or vice versa? That you're watching a show or a movie & suddenly you see these odd similiarties between the character/actor onscreen and book you read?

Another example for me would be Jessica Ann Woll from "True Blood"... for whatever reason, I imagine Rose Weasley (from Harry Potter's next gen) to look EXACTLY like her, because I can imagine Ron & Hermione having a daughter that looks like that.

One of the earliest memories of my childhood is of watching Star Wars and going, “Wow, Han Solo is so hot and that Leia chick kicks butt. They really should get together.”

I was four.

This is what happens when I get TOO busy.... My favorite summer show starts and I don't even realize it!

Silver lining: now I get to snuggle down with two brand new episodes in a row. Fantastic.

I stumbled across a fanfic site called "Sink Into Your Eyes" and realized that there's a whole treasure trove of Harry/Ginny fanfiction on the interwebs.

And happened to read a few by an author named CassandraCross.

And now I'm addicted. Oh.my.God. I stayed up until 2am last night reading one of her fics (ironically, it has the same name as one of my own fics -- "Great Expectations) and now I'm trying to hunt down some more awesome Harry/Ginny fics to fill the void since I went through all of her stories.

So... calling all Harry Potter/Ginny shippers: I need me some more fic! The problem is that I'm a very high maintenance fic reader. The fics MUST be 100% canon fics. Meaning that they have to be written post-DH and characters who are dead should be dead & people should be married to the correct people. No Draco/Hermoine pairings for me.

I saw that the last post garnered some great fic recs & I'm on it... going to start going through them now.

"Time" Magazine had a great article on fan fiction:

The Boy Who Lived Forever

I don't read much fanfiction (nothing outside of Clois "SV" really and even that has stopped), but I am really excited to read the recommended fic by padfoot4ever. It'll be my first HP fic ever.

Can anyone recommend good Harry Potter fics to me? I would love to read on Ginny & Harry post-Book 7. I'm a canon freak and so I must have all canon characters together.

Since I wrote, but things have been crazy busy. A wonderful, wonderful trip to Atlanta to visit a newborn niece. Then a great 2 day, romantic trip with my hubby to Hilton Head Island (where I actually kayaked for 1.5 hours without whining and complaining. I told him the lack of whining was his anniversary present).

And now I'm back to reality where I'm applying for graduate school & have three essays to write, along with updating my resume & hunting down transcripts & getting bosses to send in letters. Oh, what fun. And what fun I'm avoiding.

All that to say that the Book Project has been put on hold. But that's OK, because I've got the story swimming around in there and it'll be put on paper eventually.
